Violist Paul Silverthorne Featured at the March 12 Irving Arts Center Concert

Irving, Texas. February 18, 2019

Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra welcomes back violist Paul Silverthorne to perform the Walton Viola Concerto during the “Across the Pond” concert on March 16, 2019 at 7:30 PM at the Irving Arts Center, Carpenter Hall. Earlier in the week, Mr. Silverthorne is presenting a rare opportunity for university-level viola students. Funded in part by the City of Irving through the Irving Arts Board, the Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra presents “Masterclass with Paul Silverthorne.”

On Tuesday March 12 at 3:00 PM, Mr. Silverthorne will host a masterclass with top viola students from the area. This is a special opportunity for young talents to work with a musician of world-class caliber. That evening at 7:00 PM, the LCSO will open their rehearsal to the public, providing a behind the scenes look as the musicians prepare for the concerts. The LCSO is grateful for an Innovation Grant from the Irving Arts Board to make these programs possible. Both events are free to the public and occur at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 N. MacArthur Blvd., Irving. Those wishing to attend the open rehearsal are asked to arrive at least 15 minutes early so as not to disrupt the rehearsal.

Paul Silverthorne has combined a busy solo career with the position of Principal Viola of both the London Symphony Orchestra from 1991 and the London Sinfonietta from 1988.

On leaving the LSO in October 2015 he was appointed Professor of Viola at the School of Music at Soochow University in Suzhou, China where he has joined the international faculty there. From his base in China he continues to perform and teach in the UK and elsewhere. His solo performances regularly take him to the USA, the Far East, Australia and Russia as well as closer to home in the UK and Europe.

He has performed with such conductors as Sir Colin Davis, André Previn, Sir Simon Rattle, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Christopher Hogwood, Oliver Knussen, John Adams and Kent Nagano, with the LSO and other major orchestras in the UK, USA and Europe. After a performance at the Proms, The Times described him as ‘[...] a virtuoso in sensitivity and technique’.

His recordings cover a wide range of repertoire and appear on EMI, Naxos, Chandos, Koch International Classics, ASV, Meridian, Albany and other labels to widespread acclaim. His recent album, ‘Beethoven by Arrangement’ with pianist David Owen Norris, a collection of works arranged for viola and piano, was issued on the Toccata Classics label and widely praised – ‘[...] with a performance of the quality here, we can experience the dedicated and delightful musicianship that these players bring to this wonderful music’ (International Record Review).

Las Colinas Symphony Orchestra credits its Music Director, Robert Carter Austin, for its continued outstanding and diverse orchestral programming. Maestro Austin’s background encompasses over 30 years of professional music experience and includes degrees from MIT, Cambridge University, and Stanford University. Maestro Austin’s musical experience includes conducting performances in many countries including: Korea, Ukraine, Canada, Italy, Spain, China, France, Germany, Mexico, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Colombia, Philippines, Guatemala, Dominican Republic and the United States.

Masterclass with Paul Silverthorne will begin at 3:00 PM at the Irving Arts Center, Carpenter Hall.
