Safety Tips: Dealing with Summer Sizzle

Irving, Texas. July 11, 2019 –

The Texas Department of State Health Services reminds residents to stay safe during the season of extreme heat. Residents are advised to take proactive measures to defend against heat-related sickness. Hot weather is part of life in Texas. Prolonged or intense heat stress can be fatal to anyone; however, children and people ages 60 and older typically are most at risk. 

During heat waves, be mindful of the following heat safety tips: 

• Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. 
• Avoid direct sunlight. 
• Those without an air conditioning system should seek refuge in an air-conditioned shelter during extreme heat.
• Do not rely on a fan as a primary cooling device during an extreme heat event. 
• Drink more water than usual, and do not wait for signs of thirst to drink. 
• Avoid alcohol or liquids containing large amounts of sugar. 
• Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. 
• Seek medical care immediately when experiencing symptoms of heat-related illness such as muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting. 
• When planning activities, choose cooler hours to be outdoors.

Another good rule of thumb is to listen to weather forecasts before prolonged work or exercise away from air conditioning, as forecasters often will provide heat warnings. Visit Emergency Management for more information.
