After a Year of Renovations Senter Park Recreation Center Is Now Open

Irving, Texas. January 2, 2020 –

After a year of renovations, Senter Park Recreation Center at 901 Senter Road is open for business. New developments are breathing life into the communities along Delaware Creek. As the City of Irving and its neighborhoods evolve, so too must its amenities to meet the needs of the community.

In early 2019, renovation began on the recreation center. Senter Park has been in operation since 1954 and was in need of an update, as the previous layout was not user friendly for staff nor inviting to guests. The renovation was the third component of a four-phase project to improve the facility’s interior and its exterior grounds.

Senter Park Recreation Center will hold a Grand Opening from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Jan. 10 at 901 Senter Road.

Residents and visitors are invited to tour the newly renovated space as well as sample the workout equipment in the gym. The event will include giveaway prizes and refreshments. For more information, call (972) 721-2641.

MODERNIZING THE GYM

The city partially closed the center last winter. The interior overhaul included relocating the fitness and weight room from the first floor to the second floor. The new workout area provides added space for structured classes and abundant natural light for patrons.

Now, the fitness room features a modern warehouse interior with warm lighting and exposed duct work pipes. The area also includes new lockers and cabana-style family restrooms with shower facilities. Audio and sprinkler system upgrades also were installed throughout the building.

The exercise room on the first floor was converted into an activity room, complete with added storage, laminate wood flooring and fresh paint. The first and second level facilities now meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements.

One of the most notable features in the renovation is the main reception area. The 180-degree glass front entry provides an open and inviting space to meet with recreation center staff. Additionally, staff can now monitor both the front and rear entrances of the building with ease.

The Sports Hall of Fame and its athletic memorabilia now reside at the Irving Archives and Museum. Offices for staff now occupy the reconfigured space.

SECURING THE FUNDING

The project was made possible through Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding, which is provided to the City of Irving from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. CDBG funds are used in Irving to help improve the quality of life for moderate income neighborhoods.

In 2017, phase one improvements began on the Senter Park playground and tennis court. In 2018, phase two included replacement of the Senter Park gymnasium and pool roofs and an upgrade of the outside marquee sign to a modern, digital monument sign. Additionally, parking lot lights received energy-efficient LED lighting updates and a fresh coat of paint.

Senter Park Recreation Center is open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday-Tuesday and Thursday-Friday; 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday.

RENOVATIONS MOVING FORWARD

In addition to Senter Park, the city also is renovating Georgia Farrow Recreation Center at 530 Davis Drive. The project began in fall 2019 and includes a second gym, new restroom, locker rooms, an expanded weight room and additional parking. The project is made possible through the Department of Housing and Urban Development Section 108 Loan Guarantee Program and completion is slated for summer 2020.
