The Jack D. Huffman Community Building in Irving to be Unveiled

Irving, Texas. January 24, 2020 –

On Jan. 29, the City of Irving will officially rename the former Irving Central Library. The building’s name will change to the Jack D. Huffman Community Building, honoring the work of former Irving City Manager Jack D. Huffman.

The unveiling will held from 9 to 10 a.m. on the Irving Boulevard side of the former Central Library, 801 W. Irving Blvd.

This facility is now home to The Study USA , Irving Archives and Museum and Irving Public Library administrative offices. 

ABOUT JACK D. HUFFMAN 

Huffman served as Irving City Manager from 1973-1993. During that time, the city underwent extensive growth. As city manager, he oversaw the repaving of Irving streets, highway extensions and a new wastewater trunk and water mains. Additionally, Huffman worked on large construction projects including:

• The Irving Central Library, 1986
• Civic Center, 1976
• Irving Arts Center, 1985
• Criminal Justice Center, 1992

Huffman’s “crown jewel” project, The Irving Central Library, served residents for almost 30 years before its renovation. 

Before his government career began, Huffman served in the U.S. Air Force from 1950-1954. Afterward, he graduated with a B.S. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University. 

In 1958, he began his government career working as a Highway Design Engineer for the State of Texas in Beaumont, Texas. 

His career path continued as the Director of Public Works in Waco, Texas; Director of Traffic and Transportation in El Paso, Texas; City Manager and Finance Officer in Orange, Texas and City Manager in Greeley, Colorado. 

His position as the Irving City Manager was his career’s longest-held career title.

Jack Huffman passed away in November 2016.
