Two Irving ISD wrestlers, Wyatt Davis of MacArthur High School and Devon Simmons of Nimitz High School, advanced to the UIL State Wrestling Tournament after strong performances at the Regional competition. The tournament took place February 14-15 in Cypress, where both athletes competed in the 190-pound weight class.
Davis, a sophomore who also played running back for the MacArthur Cardinals football team, earned a silver medal at Regionals. Simmons, a senior and defensive end for the Nimitz Vikings football team, placed fourth at Regionals to secure his spot at State.
At the State tournament, Davis faced a challenging first-round match against Carlos Gonzalez-Ramirez of San Antonio Churchill, losing 3-0 and moving into the consolation bracket. In Round 2, Davis rebounded with a dominant win over Andrew Fahim of Prosper, securing a fall at the 2:04 mark and finishing with a 10-0 score. His next match was a hard-fought contest against Zyde Facchetti of Humble Kingwood, where Davis emerged victorious with a 17-8 decision in the third period.
In the consolation bracket semifinal, Davis faced Kane Rosario of Katy Seven Lakes, winning 14-7 and advancing to the third-place match. There, he faced Pasquale Maurici of Austin Westlake but fell by pin at 1:37, securing a fourth-place finish in the 6A 190-pound division.
Simmons faced a tough opening-round match against Pasquale Maurici of Austin Westlake. Unfortunately, he lost that match by fall (0:59), moving him into the consolation bracket. In the next match, Simmons faced off against Issa Ndiaye of Richmond Foster. After the first period, Ndiaye led 5-3, and in the second period, he secured a takedown at the 1:44 mark. The match ended in an 8-3 decision in favor of Ndiaye, eliminating Simmons from the tournament.
Davis concluded the year with an impressive 37-4 record, while Simmons finished at 36-15.

2nd Place - Robbie Rocha of Arlington Martin
3rd Place - Pasquale Maurici of Austin Westlake
4th Place - Wyatt Davis of Irving MacArthur

6th Place - Carlos Gonzalez-Ramirez of San Antonio Churchill
Win or lose, these two talented Irving athletes should be proud of having represented MacArthur and Nimitz at the state level.
