Dallas Animal Services (DAS) is currently managing a situation involving Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease (CIRD) at their shelter. The department is conducting tests to identify the underlying cause of the illness and is implementing proper cleaning and medical protocols to mitigate its effects. Lab results are pending.
To prioritize the health of Dallas dogs, DAS will limit intake to critically sick or injured animals. Pet owners facing challenges with their pets are encouraged to use resources such as the Home to Home Program, which helps connect individuals with adopters, preventing unnecessary shelter intake.
DAS asks that residents who find friendly lost dogs, schedule a time to have them vaccinated and take them home for three days while their vaccines take effect. DAS will provide resources to help find the dog’s owner and if unsuccessful, the finder will bring the dog into DAS. Finders can make a vaccine appointment by emailing DASPetSupport@dallas.gov, visiting https://das.as.me/vaccine, or calling 214-670-6742. An appointment is required to reduce wait times and limit dog vulnerability.
As part of its commitment to maintaining a high Live Release Rate, DAS encourages the community to consider adopting, fostering, or rescuing pets. The department appreciates the continued support from residents as it works to ensure the health and safety of all animals in its care.
