Dallas College Launches Aviation Maintenance Program to Meet Growing Industry Demand

Dallas College is expanding its workforce education offerings with the launch of a new Aviation Maintenance Technology (AMT) program set to begin on April 1, 2025. The 13-month program will provide students with specialized training in aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul, preparing them for careers as aviation maintenance technicians.

The program will offer three specialized certificates designed to equip students with the skills necessary to maintain and inspect aircraft in compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations. Training will take place at a state-of-the-art hangar at Dallas Executive Airport and modern classrooms at the Dallas College Workforce Center at RedBird.

“Dallas College is taking bold steps to ensure our students are at the forefront of one of the most innovative and essential industries — aviation,” said Chancellor Justin H. Lonon. “By launching new programs, expanding industry partnerships, and providing hands-on learning experiences, we are reinforcing North Texas as a national leader in aerospace.”

Industry partners played a key role in shaping the curriculum, which will prepare students for FAA General, Airframe, and Powerplant (A&P) exams. Dr. Shawnda Floyd, Dallas College provost, emphasized the program’s accessibility: “We’re thrilled to offer these courses at an active airport in South Dallas, providing access to the aerospace industry where many of our students live.”

The Dallas-Fort Worth region is home to more than 900 aerospace companies and employs over 6,900 aircraft mechanics. The median salary for aircraft mechanics and service technicians in DFW is $40.22 per hour, or approximately $80,000 annually.

“Aerospace education is essential for maintaining our region’s status as an industry leader,” said Dr. Macario Hernandez, president of Dallas College Mountain View. “It’s a win-win as we provide students with a clear pathway to high-paying, in-demand careers while strengthening the local talent pipeline.”

To celebrate the program’s launch, Dallas College plans to host several events this spring to engage students, industry professionals, and the community.
