2012 Election Spotlight: Phil Riddle

Phil Riddle - Running for Irving's District 4 Council Seat (View District 4 Map).  The following Bio was submitted by Mr. Riddle to Irving Weekly:

"Phil Riddle is a 63 year resident of Irving and has resided in District 4 for 33 years.  After attending school in the Irving ISD, he graduated from Irving High School in 1967.  His college education was obtained at Texas A&M and UT Arlington with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from UTA in 1972.

After college, Phil enlisted in the U.S. Air Force.  He was a Distinguished Graduate of the USAF Officer Training School in 1973.

Following a short  time in the military, Phil returned to work at Roadway Express where he had worked during college.  While at Roadway, he moved up through the organization to reach the level of Terminal Manager.  Phil left Roadway in August, 1977 to join the Irving Fire Department.  During  his service with the IFD, he served as a firefighter/paramedic for 32.5 years.  He was trained as a Rope Rescue Technician and Swift Water Rescue Technician.  Phil retired as a Captain in February 2010.

Phil has a desire to continue serving the people of Irving.  He has observed the dealings and contracts with outside groups and he sees a great need for more attention being given to the interests of the City of Irving.  There needs to be greater control in regards to audits and expenditures in these contracts.

The Heritage Crossing project has the opportunity to get off to a fresh start and should move to the forefront of city business.

The City of Irving is in a good position to establish itself as a leader in new growth areas and revitalization of older sections of the city.  It does require, however, being conservative enough to protect the delivering of services to the people for the present time and the future.  The city, cannot gamble its future fiscal stability on the present desires to invest in a development  which is beset with difficulty getting started and contractual ramifications that place the financial burden on the City of Irving" - end of Bio.

"It was my honor to serve this city and its citizens for over 32 years as a firefighter/paramedic. During my career, I had the opportunities to work in every area of the city.  As a result, I was able to experience the uniqueness of nearly all the neighborhoods in town.", Mr. Riddle says through his website.

Mr. Riddle sums it up, "The City of Irving needs to return to a level of operation that seeks after honesty, integrity, and loyalty to the citizens of Irving. Phil Riddle wants to be the representative that provides those qualities for the citizens of District 4."

Mr. Riddle's view on some City issues:

  • Believes there needs to be more stringent oversight of contracts between the City of Irving and outside groups/vendors. Outside groups should be held to the same level of expense verification as City of Irving employees.

  • Believes that any contract entered into by the City of Irving must be written in a manner that protects the interests and integrity of the City of Irving.

  • Wants to see quality, single-family, owner occupied development in the Heritage Crossing District.

  • Believes that City of Irving employees should be treated with respect and paid well.  No raises for workers means no raises for supervisors or department heads.
