Irving, Texas. September 6, 2012 –
This summer Irving High School held its first orientation camp for students entering the Aviation & Biomedical Sciences Academies. The first day, students were introduced to the faculty, toured the facilities, heard from industry guest speakers, and participated in team building activities. On the second day, students in the Aviation Academy participated in a ‘behind the scenes’ experience of DFW International Airport. Students heard from Paul Martinez, VP Operations, while sitting in the board meeting room, toured the Airport Operations Center and General Aviation facilities.
Students in the Biomedical Sciences Academy participated in two seminars and a guided tour of the laboratory facilities at UT Southwestern Medical School. The staff and graduate students at UT Southwestern opened the doors of several of their research labs to our students, giving them the opportunity to see biotechnology in action. Also, Dr. Angela Mihalic, Dean of UTSW Medical School, and Dr. Stuart Ravnik, Assistant Dean of UTSW Graduate School, both spoke to the Biomedical Sciences students about preparing for careers in medicine. The summer orientation camp was a great experience for students entering these two new S.T.E.M. academies at Irving High School.
