Irving, Texas. September 7, 2012

At last night’s Irving City Council meeting, Mayor Beth Van Duyne honored Carmen Littleton as an Irving High Spirited Citizens for her longtime dedication to the Irving community.

Littleton and her late husband, Joe, moved to Irving in 1960. They joined Holy Family Catholic Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and chair of the Altar Guild. Still active at Holy Family, Littleton continues to take communion to church members who are in nursing homes or homeboun

In 1962 she joined the Irving Lady Lions Club, where she served as welfare chairman and president. Fifty years later, Littleton is still a member of the Lady Lions Club, and works on projects for organizations such as Irving Cares and the America Cancer Association.

At the age of 70, Littleton began volunteering as a DFW Airport Ambassador. Fluent in English and Spanish, and able to understand Portuguese and Italian, she considered this a perfect volunteer role. She’s been named Ambassador of the Month and received a watch on her ten year anniversary. Currently in the 13th year of what she calls her “fun time,” Littleton has no plans for retirement.

In the fall of 2009, Littleton enrolled in and completed an eight week course at the Irving Citizens Police Academy. She learned how stakeouts are formed, toured the jail and participated in shooting practice. Out of nine rounds, Littleton hit the target seven times, which earned her the nickname “Pistol Packing Mama.”

Van Duyne said Littleton had “given more time to the community since she turned 70 than most people do in a lifetime.”

The High Spirited Citizen program was initiated in 1988 by the Irving Convention and Visitors Bureau.  Its purpose is to encourage the spirit of volunteerism.  To date, more than 400 of Irving’s “unsung” heroes have been honored with the award.
