Man Fatally Shot by Fort Worth Officer After Confrontation on US 287 Bridge

FORT WORTH, Texas — A man was fatally shot by a Fort Worth police officer Thursday afternoon, March 12th, after an encounter on a bridge along U.S. 287, according to the Fort Worth Police Department.

Police said the incident occurred at about 4:03 p.m. when a Central Division officer traveling northbound on U.S. 287 near East Maddox Avenue noticed a man leaning over the bridge holding an object.

The officer stopped to check on the man and discovered he was holding a "sharp object". Authorities said the man began cutting his own neck with the object.

When the officer exited his vehicle, police said the man ran toward him while holding the sharp object. The officer fired his service weapon at approximately 4:05 p.m.

During the incident, multiple callers contacted 911 reporting a man on the bridge with glass in his hand who was cutting himself. Another caller reported that the man appeared to be attempting to jump before running toward the officer and being shot.

Officers provided medical aid at the scene and requested assistance from the Fort Worth Fire Department. The man was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:28 p.m.

The officer involved is a six year veteran assigned to Central Patrol.

Detectives with the department’s Major Case Unit and Internal Affairs Division are investigating the shooting. Police said the details released so far are preliminary and the investigation remains ongoing.
