BY IRVING WEEKLY STAFFIrving, Texas. February 13, 2013 – TJ Lee Elementary School reported receiving several threatening phone calls from a 616 (Michigan) area code. The Irving Police Department was called and made report 13-2736. The caller uses abusive language and claims that the person receiving the call will be arrested at home if they do not comply with his request (money, credit card numbers, etc.) for payment of a fake outstanding debt. This is a scam originating out of India. ABC Nightline ran a story last summer describing the scam, "The calls are part of a massive scam, one that appears to target struggling Americans -- especially those who have gone online to apply for payday loans. Armed with personal information from those pilfered applications, the threatening callers, who claim to be debt collectors poised to initiate legal action, have managed to pry loose millions of dollars from their victims -- even when the victims never owed money in the first place. This reminds me of this call I got a few weeks back and this man who claimed his name was Officer Peters said I owed money to someone about 15 months ago and that I should pay immediately or get jail time. He sounded indeed like a police officer but I knew better. I looked up Officer Peters' phone number and pulled up several complaints posted at http://www.callercenter.com/209-920-4601.html about how this scammer threatened a lot of people to get them to disclose credit card details. |
