DOD’s BlackBerry order boosts smartphone maker’s stock

BlackBerry stock rose 8.2 percent after the DOD announced that its Defense Information Systems Agency said last week that 98 percent of the devices in one of its new networks will be BlackBerrys. Bloomberg reported that the agency will add about 80,000 BlackBerrys and roughly 1,800 phones and tablets powered by Apple Inc. (Nasdaq: AAPL) iOS software and Google Inc.’s (Nasdaq: GOOG) Android system to its network at the end of this month. Bloomberg said meeting meeting military specs has been difficult for Apple and Android, but that BlackBerry was already there. It’s good news for BlackBerry, which has its U.S. headquarters in Irving.
