IPD Approved For 2014-2015 STEP Grant

Irving, Texas - The Irving Police Department was recently approved for a Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) Comprehensive Grant through September, 2015. The grant will allow the police department to purchase equipment and continue deploying officers on Irving’s highways to enforce speeding laws. Additionally, the grant will allow for the use of officers to enforce seatbelt laws and conduct DWI operations throughout the city. This year, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will contribute $167,134 towards the STEP budget. The goal of the project is to reduce the number of alcohol and speed related crashes.

During the 2013-2014 grant period, Irving officers wrote nearly 8,700 speeding citations, over 1,000 seatbelt citations and made 136 DWI arrests. The Irving Police Department will continue to partner with TxDOT and pledges their continued participation in programs that encourage and support efforts to enhance the safety of our roadways.

The enforcement operations will be supplemented by various public information and educational efforts. Such efforts include traffic safety presentations at community events, health fairs, schools and other venues. For more information on any of our special enforcement efforts, or to request a traffic safety presentation, please contact Lt. Lewis Remington, Special Operations Division, Irving Police Department (972) 721-7840.
