Irving ISD Teacher Named NAACP Educator of the Year

The Irving-Carrollton Branch of the NAACP named Irving ISD's Mary Perry as Educator of the Year. Perry is a veteran educator with over 25 years of experience teaching in Alexandria, Louisiana, Fayetteville, N.C., and Wisner, La.  She is currently a kindergarten ESL (English as a Second Language) and GT (Gifted and Talented) teacher at Thomas Haley Elementary School.  She mentors new kindergarten teachers at Thomas Haley.

In addition to teaching, Mary coordinates the annual soul food luncheon for faculty/staff to commemorate Black History Month in February.  She is a member of the Hispanic Heritage Committee, tutors struggling students after school, serves on various other district/school committees, and is an active member of the Association of Teachers and Professional Educators.

"I became a teacher because I wanted to make a difference…I remain a teacher because I'm making a difference, one child at a time," says Perry.
