Earthquake Generates Non-Emergency 9-1-1 Calls

Irving, Texas, January 7, 2015 - Over the past few months, the City of Irving has experienced numerous earthquakes originating near the site of the old Texas Stadium. In an effort to identify the cause, the City of Irving has partnered with seismologists from SMU to gain an understanding of these events. Despite the frequency of the earthquakes, there have been no reported injuries or significant property damage.

In the minutes following these earthquakes, many people have called 911 to report their experience. Consequently, the 9-1-1 system was overwhelmed and operators were quickly trying to reach callers with a true emergency. The Irving Police Department requests that you refrain from calling 9-1-1 following an earthquake unless you are in immediate need of medical attention or other emergency services. An unnecessary call to 9-1-1 may prevent someone with a critical need from reaching an emergency operator.

Irving residents and visitors are encouraged to monitor local media outlets for information following an earthquake. Additional information may be found on the U.S. Geological Survey website at www.usgs.gov.
