MacArthur Girls Basketball: Lady Cardinals Ousted from Playoffs by Spring Dekaney

Two minutes into the Class 6A Region II semifinal opener, MacArthur found itself staring at a 10-0 deficit.

The Lady Cardinals were never able to recover. Lauren Grigsby, a 5-8 senior guard, scored 18 points and sophomore Keishawna Scott added 14 as Dekaney (34-2) clinched a berth in Sunday’s championship game.

MacArthur (25-11) went 15 minutes without a field goal, including the entire second quarter when it scored only three points. Dekaney stretched its halftime lead to 32-11.

Lady Cardinal senior guard Tana Driver notched 13 of her game-high 23 points in the fourth quarter to help close what was once a 30-point Dekaney lead to 13. Jazmine Hardeman came off the bench to score all seven of her points in the second half.

Returning next season for MacArthur coach Suzie Oelschlegel will be three starters --juniors Gabby Gregory and Essence Wells and sophomore Alyson Gamez.

Dekaney will take a 22-game winning streak into the title game.

MacArthur had a solid run in this year's playoffs:

  • Defeated Lake Highlands 61-36 in Bi-District Playoffs
  • Defeated Killeen 48-46 in Area Playoffs
  • Defeated Rockwall 36-29 in Regional Quarterfinals
  • Lost to Dekaney 58-41 in Regional Semifinals
