Irving, Grand Prairie unveil Campion Trail extension

No one minded the drizzle. The cooler weather made for an ideal morning to dedicate a new part of the Campion Trail. Called the Lone Star–Campion Trail Connection, the extension adds 2.4 miles of trail joining the Lone Star Trail in Grand Prairie with Irving’s Campion Trail. There is now a continuous 9.6 mile trail connecting the two cities.

Ray Cerda, director of Irving’s Parks and Recreation Department, welcomed guests and recognized many who supported the project. Speakers included Dallas County Commissioner Elba Garcia and Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, Irving City Council member Gerald Farris, Grand Prairie Mayor Ron Jensen, Grand Prairie Mayor Pro TemJorga Clemson and Irving Park Board chair Marilyn Wilson.

Garcia made a surprise announcement and told the group that she moved funds to extend a northern part of Campion Trail to next year so it will open sooner than planned.

Jenkins said that he loved “these two cities” and is a big fan of the trail since he’s a cyclist.

Clemson said when her mother, Ruthe Jackson, passed away, she told her to be sure to stay committed to the Trinity Trail System, a regional trail system linking cities in the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Irving and Grand Prairie are the first two cities to connect along the Trinity Trail System.

Irving City Council member Phil Riddle, whose district covers the extension, cut the ribbon to formally open the new trail. Then, guests enjoyed food provided by Culinary Improv.
