Irving-based CHRISTUS Health expands

Irving-based CHRISTUS Health this week announced two big strategic deals. One, it will expand into Colombia by partially acquiring a Cali-based cooperative. Two, it will form a joint venture with a Shreveport-based urgent care chain that owns four locations in Louisiana and Little Rock.

CHRISTUS already operates in Chile, and has reportedly been speaking with Colombia’s Coomeva Cooperative Medica about a deal for the past two years, its CEO told Finance Colombia. It’s also dedicated significant resources to shifting its Louisiana hospitals into retail-based territory, announcing a partnership with the New Orleans-based Oschner Health System to extend its services to areas beyond its hospitals.

It also last year acquired four urgent care centers in San Antonio that cumulatively log more than 75,000 patient visits annually, its senior VP told HealthLeaders.

In Colombia, CHRISTUS will have an equal ownership stake in the provider network known as Sinergia, which Finance Colombia reports sees patients who have a health plan operated by the Coomeva Cooperative as well as from outside payers. CHRISTUS will own a services company inside the cooperative that offers payroll, group purchasing, human resources and other shared operations. It will have a minority stake in the insurance company Coomeva EPS, which contracts with the Colombian government to provide its citizens with universal healthcare. About 3.7 million people are part of that plan.

In Louisiana, meanwhile, the company’s deal with Velocity Care Urgent Treatment Centers is not an acquisition but a joint operating agreement to where CHRISTUS can provide the “business acumen” as Velocity begins to consider expanding.
