With 67.49%, Rick Stopfer replaces Beth Van Duyne as Irving's mayor. Stopfer is a retired businessman and former council member. He served terms as mayor pro tem and deputy pro tem during his tenure on the city council.
Stopfer had run on the following priorities:
- Keeping Irving Moving (and Flowing)
- Capitalizing on Opportunities for Smart Growth
- Ensuring the Safety of our Neighborhoods and Businesses
- Engaging All Residents and Businesses in Dialogue
- Conduct city business in the most fiscally responsible and transparent manner possible.
Stopfer posted a thank you message to his facebook account after the big win, "Thank you so much to all the residents of Irving for taking the time to vote. It was great to have record voter turnout. A special thank you to my grassroots volunteers and all who voted for me. I am honored to serve as your next mayor."
Mayor Beth Van Duyne opted not to run for re-election in 2017. Van Duyne accepted a post in President Trump's administration as the HUD Regional Administrator.
