Bringing Deaf Awareness to Britain Students

On Friday, Irving ISD’s Regional Day School Program for the Deaf (RDSPD) hosted its second annual Deaf Awareness Day in honor of Better Speech & Hearing Month. From activities to equipment demonstrations, numerous community presenters and interpreters led Britain Elementary students in a variety of presentations designed to foster an appreciation for deaf culture. The afternoon was rounded out with special performances by award-winning deaf magician Magic Morgan and Emma Faye Rudkin, the first deaf Miss San Antonio 2015 and 2017.

Since the RDSPD is housed at Britain, Bowie Middle School and Nimitz High School, Deaf Awareness Day was a family affair. Former Britain and Bowie RDSPD student Antoine Dinka was among presenters and is pictured here with his former teacher, now RDSPD Supervisor, Sherry Clifton. Students from the deaf education program at Bowie and Nimitz American Sign Language (ASL) classes also taught sign language lessons. Photos from the event are on the district’s Photo Gallery.
