Many residents have reached out to Irving Animal Services (IAS) expressing concerns about coyote sightings and recent news reports regarding coyote attacks in Frisco. Experts nationwide aren’t sure what is causing the reported attacks and are continuing to investigate the situation.
Coyotes live and thrive all over North Texas and in Irving. They are part of the urban landscape. Coyote attacks are not common, and interactions are typically uneventful.
While we haven’t had any reported attacks in Irving, IAS would like to remind residents of a few easy steps they can take to stay safe.
- Don't inadvertently feed wildlife by leaving out pet food, unsecured trash, extra birdseed or brush piles. Place trash on the curb the morning of pickup.
- Never intentionally feed wild animals.
- Keep pets secured indoors or supervise them when outdoors. Walk dogs on a leash.
- Carry a whistle or an air horn to scare off animals. If you don’t have one, make noise by clapping your hands or yelling.
Immediately notify IAS of any encounter with a coyote that appears sick or injured or is not easily scared off. Call (972) 721-2256 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. Emergency only response is available after hours or city holidays.
