City of Irving Recognized by EPA for Renewable Energy Efforts

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recognized the City of Irving at the Jan. 14 City Council Work Session meeting for the city’s commitment to doubling the use of renewable energy to 100% by 2023. This announcement elevated Irving’s designation in the EPA’s Green Power Partnership to the organizational level. Established by the EPA, the Green Power Partnership encourages the use of renewable energy and the reduction of environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use.

“The City of Irving is proud to be recognized by the EPA and is committed to reducing the city’s carbon footprint in order for future generations to enjoy the beauty of our great city. We will continue to offer our residents “green themed” year-round classes, programs and events,” said Irving Mayor Rick Stopfer.

Through the leadership and vision of the Mayor and City Council, and with the help of TXU Energy, the City of Irving announced plans to move toward 100% renewable energy in city-owned building and facilities by 2023. This action prompted the EPA to elevate the city’s status in the partnership to the organizational level.

“The City of Irving is doing amazing work and shows true leadership for green power initiatives,” said Rebecca Taylor, EPA Programs Manager. “This progression is proof that Irving always looks forward and ahead toward innovations that protect human health and the environment.”

The city joined the partnership in 2016 after introducing state-of-the art technology to create on-site renewable energy at the West Irving Library. In 2019, the city replaced 50% of energy with wind-generated power. In addition to the designation, and because of the commitment to going green, the City of Irving has the distinction of being part of the Top 30 Local Government list.
