With Lionel Messi Officially Leaving Barcelona, Could FC Dallas Be His Next Club?

After 17 seasons playing for FC Barcelona, Lionel Messi will not be signed.

"Despite having reached an agreement between FC Barcelona and Leo Messi and with the clear intention of both parties to sign a new contract today, it cannot be formalized due to economic and structural obstacles (Spanish LaLiga regulations)," the club said in a statement.

Could you imagine Lionel Messi, arguably the best player of all time, playing for FC Dallas?

What are the chances FC Dallas can land him?

Messi to FC DAllas

All jokes aside, sooner or later, an MLS team will have to be a major player for someone of Messi's caliber if they want to be a quality world league.  Inter Milan, the New York and Los Angeles teams have or have had top players, but not close to a Messi.  Zlatan Ibrahimovic's play in the MLS was big, but having someone that can relate to the Hispanic community would be huge.

FC Dallas with Messi would attract a ton of media coverage and every game would be sold out.  Children around the world would be waring the #10 Messi FC Dallas jersey.  The impact to the team and city would be immediate and substantial.  Every FC Dallas game would be televised nationally and throughout the world.

Back in February, FC Dallas' forward Franco Jara was asked about the possibility of Messi joining an MLS team.

"If he [Messi] comes to play [in MLS], I'd kiss his feet. It would be insane, a madness.", said Jara.

Of course, I do realize that it would be almost impossible for FC Dallas or any other MLS team to compete with the money a Manchester City or a PSG could offer.   Right now, it looks like PSG has the best shot at Messi after Manchester City's £100m signing of Jack Grealish.
