Today, Wednesday, October 6, an individual opened fire at Timberview High School in Arlington, Texas, injuring multiple people. While details are still emerging, we know this: common sense gun policies work. Requiring background checks on all gun transfers and promoting safe gun storage will save lives.
According to The Gun Violence Archive, today's school shooting is the 537th U.S. mass shooting of 2021, in which 4 or more people were shot.
"Our hearts are with those who were injured at Timberview High School today, those who witnessed the shooting, and their loved ones — who are now forced to live with this devastating trauma and its effects," said Gyl Switzer, Executive Director. "Texas Gun Sense is committed to continuing to mobilize our partnerships and share our policy expertise to advance safe gun laws that protect our students, teachers, and communities. We should not have to live this way."
In the 2021 regular legislative session, Texas elected leaders made it easier for individuals to access and carry guns. Texas needs stronger policies to stop gun tragedies, not just for highly-publicized shootings but for everyday gun violence.
Texas Gun Sense is the only statewide gun violence prevention organization based in Texas. Non-profit and nonpartisan, Texas Gun Sense advocates for common-sense, evidence-based policies to reduce gun injuries and deaths. For more information, visit www.txgunsense.org
