Irving Police Arrest Man for Continuous Child Sex Abuse; Investigators Believe There are More Victims

Averil Drew Cardwell

The Irving Police Department is seeking to locate additional victims that could have been sexually abused by Averil Drew Cardwell, 69-year-old, who was a long-time resident of Irving in the 1500 block of Upton Place.  According to the Dallas Appraisal District, Cardwell lived at that Irving home until 2019. At one time, he also lived on Hilltop Drive in South Irving.

Cardwell was arrested on August 23, 2022, at his current residence in Cedar Hill for Continuous Sex Abuse of a Young Child after investigators received an outcry from a 21-year-old female victim. The victim stated she was assaulted by Cardwell between the ages of three and eight.

While investigating the initial outcry, a second outcry was received, pointing to more potential child victims. On October 2, 2022, Cardwell turned himself in at Dallas County Jail after a second warrant for Continuous Sexual Abuse of a Young Child was issued for him. As of this date, investigators have identified four victims dating back to 1986, and additional charges are pending. Cardwell has bonded out of jail and is currently not in custody.

Investigators suspect there are additional victims. We encourage anyone whose child could have interacted with Cardwell to have those discussions with their children, family members, and friends.
