Irving ISD Board Action for January 12, 2009

McGugan Honored as Teacher of the Month

Amie McGugan, instructional coach at Schulze Elementary School , was honored as Teacher of the Month for January. Originally from Ponca City , Oklahoma , McGugan earned a Bachelor of Science degree with emphasis in elementary education from University of Oklahoma . She taught in Dallas ISD and Galveston ISD before joining IISD in 2005 as third grade ESL teacher at Schulze. McGugan was named Schulze's Title 1 instructional coach at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.

Russell Recognized as Employee of the Month

Shirley Russell, attendance clerk at Good Elementary School , was recognized as Employee of the Month for January. Russell joined Irving ISD in 1985 as a part-time office clerk at Nimitz High School . After briefly leaving the district in 1986, she returned to Nimitz in 1993 and transferred to Good in 1999. Russell served as general aide and then special needs aide before becoming attendance clerk at Good in 2002. She has been involved in PTA activities at several district schools, holds a PTA Lifetime Membership, and is active in her church.

IISD Students Honor Trustees

Seven fifth grade students from IISD elementary schools presented certificates to the Board of Trustees in observance of Texas ' School Board Recognition Month. Students making presentations were: Gerber Chavez, Barton Elementary School; Isobel Austin, Hanes Elementary School; Joel Mambe, Johnston Elementary School; Jessenia Limones, Keyes Elementary School; Alex Neely, Schulze Elementary School; Tanner Phillips-Smith, Townsell Elementary School; and Sreya Varghese, Stipes Elementary School.

In other business, Trustees:

  • Approved minutes of Noon Work Session and Regular Board Meeting on Monday, December 15, 2008.
  • Approved Financial Statement for November 2008.
  • Approved Resolution & Order #08-09-10 authorizing January amendment to the 2008-2009 Budget increasing revenue to $275,807,446 and increasing appropriations to $283,267,448.
  • Approved Resolution & Order #08-09-11 accepting supplements to the Irving ISD Tax Rolls.
  • Approved Resolution & Order #08-09-12 authorizing Fund Balance designations for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2008.
  • Approved submission of Texas Support for Homeless Education Program (TEXSHEP) Grant, 2009-2012, requesting $128,940 per year to facilitate enrollment, attendance, and academic success of homeless students.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-77 accepting Design Development Phase for Johnston Elementary School Bond Construction Project.
  • Approved Irving ISD Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for the fiscal year ended August 31, 2008.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-78 accepting competitive sealed proposal #09-02 for Cisco network hardware and installation for The Academy of Irving ISD at a cost of $564,627.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-79 accepting competitive sealed proposal #08-85 from Verizon for local telephone service at a cost of $564,183 for phone instruments and $1,051,698 per year for services.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-80 accepting competitive sealed proposal #09-06 for Cisco network hardware and installation at various IISD locations at a cost of $955,151.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-81 accepting second reading and final approval of revised Board Policy CLA (Local) regarding the posting of signage to indicate video surveillance is being conducted; restrictions regarding camera placement; and the viewing or accessing of video recordings.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-82 accepting second reading and final approval of revised board policy FL (Local) addressing video recordings as educational records that are protected under federal law.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-83 accepting second reading and final approval of revised board policy GRA (Local) regarding the district's legal obligation to protect educational records of students and the parameters by which law enforcement officials may gain access to video recordings.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-84 accepting second reading and final approval of revised board policy FM (Local) adding pre-calculus classes to the list of classes in local policy which would prevent suspension from extracurricular activities due to failing grades in one grading period.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-85 pertaining to the election and resignation of personnel as recommended by the superintendent.
  • Approved Resolution #08-09-86 accepting gifts and donations to the district for the months of December 2008 and January 2009 totaling $21,306.
  • Received an instructional report presentation and public hearing regarding the IISD Academic Excellence Indicator System.
  • Received a presentation from Irving Schools Foundation.
  • Received information regarding filing for IISD Board of Trustees election in 2009.
  • Received individual trustee reports on attendance at district events and activities.
