CITI and Verizon Honored as Donors of Distinction by Literacy Instruction for Texas

Literacy Instruction for Texas (LIFT) recently honored CITI and Verizon at the 2008 Volunteer and Donors of Distinction Annual Luncheon held at on February 27, 2009 at Prestonwood Country Club.

Known internationally for their support of literacy programs and literacy advocacy organizations,, Verizon has been one of LIFT's most steadfast supporters.  In 2008, the foundation funded more than 2,500 books for LIFT's English-as-a-Second Language program and sponsored the much needed redesign of LIFT's website.  Mid year, Verizon Reads surprised LIFT with a gift of more than $27,000 in direct contributions from their customer bills.  Their lifetime support of LIFT is in excess of half a million dollars.

Most recently CITI acted as the title sponsor for the 2008 Champions of Literacy Luncheon.  CITI's foundation adds to that considerable financial commitment by funding programs independent of any event.

"The support shown by both Citi and Verizon reinforces the message that adult literacy is a cause that deserves critical attention.", says Executive Director, Sonyia Hartwell.  "We are thankful for their continued support and commitment to end illiteracy."

Since 1961, LIFT has been forging the keys to self-reliance and hope by enhancing lives and strengthening communities by raising the adult literacy rate in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex.  Last year LIFT served more than 8,000 adult learners through Adult Literacy, English as a Second Language (ESL) and Family Literacy Programs.
