MacArthur Wins Girls Basketball State Tournament; Parade Planned

The Lady Cardinals completed a historical 37-2 season, winning the state championship for the first time in school history.  In a championship game dominated by Mac, the Lady Cardinals defeated Georgetown 74-51.

Alexis Jones lead the Cardinals with 25 points and 14 assists.   Ayriel Anderson, a 5'3" guard, provided support with 22 points as well as great ball movement and some entertaining acrobatic plays.

Coach Oelschlegel reminded her players after the 74-51 win at the Frank Erwin Center of the wager she made with her players by pointing at her bicep. If the girls won the championship, she would get a tattoo of the team’s motto for the year, “We in dat thing.”

“We told the girls that they were going to watch us get a tattoo if we won the state championship, so I guess I have to get ready for that,” Oelschlegel said.

“She [Alexis Jones] was our leader this year and everyone followed in her footsteps,” Oelschlegel said.

Oelschlegel summerized the season and her feelings after winning the state championship, “This has been one of my heart’s desires and God gave me one of my hearts desires -- to take a team to the state tournament and win the state championship. I’m so grateful to this team and their teamwork.”

At the state tournament, MacArthur defeated Wagner High School from San Antonio 64-51 in the semifinal game.  After defeating Georgetown in the championship game, Junior Alexis Jones was named Most Valuable Player. Jones, Junior Ayriel Anderson, and Senior Karmyn Jackson were named to the Conference 5A All-Tournament Team.

In recognition of winning the Texas 5A State Girls’ Basketball Championship, MacArthur High School will host a victory parade for the MacArthur Lady Cardinals Girls Basketball Team at 3 p.m. March 11.

The parade will begin at the school, traveling east on West Northgate Drive, then turn south on North O'Connor Blvd. The parade will then turn west on Metker Street, then will turn north on North MacArthur Blvd., and return to the school.

Congratulations to the Lady Cardinals!
