CHRISTUS Health Adopts Abridge AI to Reduce Clinician Burnout and Improve Patient Care

Today, Abridge announced an enterprise-wide agreement with CHRISTUS Health, an international, not-for-profit health system based in Texas. CHRISTUS Health, which includes 15,000 physicians and over 600 care centers, has been using Abridge's generative AI solution for clinical documentation in recent months. This partnership aims to alleviate clinician burnout and enhance patient care.

CHRISTUS Health piloted Abridge earlier this year to assess its impact on clinicians. Positive feedback and a successful study demonstrating Abridge's benefits led to the enterprise-wide agreement. Survey results revealed:

  • Significant Time Savings: Clinicians spent 60% less time on documentation outside of work hours, improving work-life balance.
  • Reduced Burnout: There was a 40% decrease in physician burnout rates, measured by the Mini Z Burnout Survey.
  • Improved Patient Interaction: Clinicians increased their undivided attention to patients by 41%, enhancing communication and patient satisfaction.

Dr. Myriah Willborn, a family medicine doctor at CHRISTUS Trinity Clinic in Corpus Christi, Texas, noted the positive impact: “Abridge has been a game changer. I feel much less distracted with patients since I can focus on the conversation and history without pausing to take extensive notes or re-ask questions I missed during notetaking.”

The generative AI solution also led to a 78% reduction in cognitive load for CHRISTUS clinicians, allowing for a more focused and efficient approach to patient care. Cognitive load, which measures the mental effort required to complete tasks, has been linked to burnout and patient safety issues.

Dr. Timothy Barker, Ambulatory Chief Medical Information Officer at CHRISTUS Health, expressed enthusiasm about the agreement: “I am very excited about our enterprise agreement with Abridge, which we believe is going to transform clinical practice for our ambulatory physicians. It is going to be more transformative than anything I have seen in the last 20 years.”

CHRISTUS plans to extend Abridge's availability to all ambulatory clinicians in the coming months.

Dr. Shiv Rao, CEO and founder of Abridge, highlighted the significance of the partnership: "The remarkable outcomes and resoundingly positive feedback from clinicians at CHRISTUS Health underscore the profound impact of generative AI on the future of medicine. By alleviating cognitive load and creating space for more meaningful patient interactions, we will improve the lives of clinicians today and draw the next generation of patient care providers to the profession."
