On the morning of September 17, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m., Garland Police Department officers responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at an apartment on the 700 block of Broadway Commons. Upon arrival, officers observed that the front door had been forcibly breached.
Inside the apartment, officers found two young children. As they proceeded, gunfire was heard from a closed bedroom door. Officers took cover and issued commands while ensuring the children’s safety. The male suspect, identified as 35-year-old Brodrick Earl Kennedy, emerged from the bedroom and surrendered.
Officers found two adult women in the bedroom with gunshot wounds. One woman was pronounced dead at the scene, and the other was transported to a hospital, where she later died. The victims were identified as Brodrick’s wife, 38-year-old Donillie Lashay Kennedy, and her mother, 58-year-old Shirley Jean Phillips.
The children have been safely placed with extended family members. Brodrick Kennedy is charged with Capital Murder and is currently held in the Garland Detention Center with no bond set. The investigation is ongoing.
