Irving Firefighter and Reserve Police Officer Dies in Motorcycle Crash Near Springtown

Joshua Brandes

Joshua Brandes, a 41-year-old firefighter and paramedic with the Irving Fire Department, died in a motorcycle accident on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, near Springtown in Parker County. Brandes, who served the City of Irving for over 13 years, was riding his Harley Davidson on FM 51 south of Highway 199 when the crash occurred around 1 p.m.

According to Springtown police, a semi-truck traveling north on FM 51 had stopped to make a left turn, and a truck pulling a large shed on a trailer stopped behind it. Brandes, unable to stop his motorcycle in time, attempted to swerve to avoid the trailer but clipped the back of it, severely injuring his leg. He then collided head-on with a sedan heading south.

First responders at the scene applied a tourniquet and performed CPR, but despite their efforts, they were unable to save Brandes' life. After realizing that he was a fellow first responder, his body was escorted to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office in a procession of honor.

In addition to his role with the Irving Fire Department, Brandes was a reserve police officer with the Decatur Police Department in Wise County. He had been a reserve officer for three years and also volunteered as a school resource officer at Decatur ISD.

The Irving Fire Department expressed their grief in a statement: "It is with heavy heart that the Irving Fire Department reports the off-duty passing of our Brother, Fire Equipment Operator, Joshua Brandes. FEO Brandes selflessly served the City of Irving for over thirteen years and will be missed by all."

The Decatur Police Department also shared a heartfelt message: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Officer Joshua Brandes. His dedication to our community and his selfless service will always be remembered."

Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.
