This winter, the City of Irving will commence an extensive fiber-optic network expansion project designed to connect all city facilities and improve operational efficiency across multiple service areas. The new network will build upon the city's existing 38 miles of fiber infrastructure, significantly enhancing public safety, transportation services, and overall connectivity.
The installation of city-owned fiber-optic cables is expected to save the city approximately $355,000 annually, funds that would otherwise be allocated to third-party internet service providers. Fiber-optic technology is known for delivering the fastest internet speeds and supporting high-capacity data transport, offering benefits including improved reliability of critical infrastructure, such as public safety and public notification networks.
Key city initiatives, including intelligent traffic systems, advanced utility management, and environmental monitoring systems, will benefit from the expanded network. Enhanced video security capabilities and broader coverage areas will further support the city’s commitment to public safety, enabling faster responses to community needs.
The project will also extend public Wi-Fi services in parks, libraries, and other city facilities, providing stronger internet access in underserved communities.
Costing an estimated $11.69 million, the fiber expansion project is primarily funded by the 2021 bond election, which awarded Irving $10.7 million for the development of its fiber-optic network. The installation will be completed in phases across the city, with major segments expected to be finished by mid-2025 and full operational status anticipated by 2026.
