On November 13, 2024, the Dallas City Council unanimously approved an $8 million grant to assist Forest Forward’s ambitious redevelopment of the historic Forest Theater in South Dallas. Closed since 2008, the theater is the focal point of an $81 million revitalization initiative aimed at restoring the area’s cultural and economic vitality.
“This project brings a cherished asset back to life while creating jobs and cultural opportunities for our community,” said Deputy Mayor Pro Tem Adam Bazaldua.
The redevelopment plan includes restoring the 500-seat theater, adding a 28,000-square-foot expansion with a 175-seat black box theater, as well as new amenities like a café and rooftop deck. The Forest Theater is projected to host over 140 events annually, drawing visitors and supporting local businesses.
Elizabeth Wattley, President of Forest Forward, emphasized the broader impact of the project, saying, “Forest Theater’s revitalization will strengthen South Dallas economically and culturally.”
Funding for the project includes $7 million from the City’s Infrastructure Investment Fund, established in 2023 to drive targeted development in underserved areas. Interim City Manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert highlighted the alignment with Dallas's Economic Development Policy, stating, “We’re proud to support Forest Forward and help restore this landmark.”
