In an effort to enhance service efficiency and reduce wait times, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is expanding its appointment-based services across its local offices. Nearly 400 SSA field offices have already implemented appointment-based scheduling this year, significantly improving wait times and offering a smoother customer experience. The move is aimed at streamlining the delivery of services and encouraging more online and automated transactions.
The nationwide transition to appointment-based services will occur in two phases. The first phase, running through January 5, 2025, serves as a transition period to educate customers on the new scheduling process. During this time, the SSA is encouraging customers to become familiar with available online and automated services, which allow many transactions to be completed without the need for in-person visits.
Starting January 6, 2025, customers will be required to schedule appointments for services at SSA field offices, including requests for Social Security cards. However, customers can still complete many transactions online or through the SSA’s automated phone system at 1-800-772-1213.
For those who cannot handle their business online or through automated services, appointments can be scheduled either through their local SSA office or the National 800#.
The SSA has emphasized that appointments are not mandatory for all customers. Individuals from vulnerable populations, military personnel, those with terminal illnesses, or anyone with immediate or specialized needs can still walk in for service. Additionally, some SSA offices may have minimal to no wait times and will continue to serve walk-in customers as usual.
