An Irving man is facing felony charges following a five-vehicle collision on Friday, November 22, that left one person dead and another seriously injured, according to the City of University Park.
The crash occurred at approximately 6:36 p.m. at the intersection of Preston Road and Lovers Lane. Police reports indicate that a Chevy Silverado, driven by 32-year-old Alexis Ruiz, was traveling eastbound on Lovers Lane at a high rate of speed when it ran a red light. The Silverado collided with a vehicle heading north on Preston, pushing it into three other vehicles that were stopped at the westbound red light on Lovers.
Witnesses reported that Ruiz attempted to flee the scene, but a bystander managed to detain him temporarily. Ruiz broke free but was apprehended by University Park police officers a block away in the 7100 block of Tulane.
Emergency responders arrived on the scene at 6:38 p.m. and found 44-year-old Ana Gonzalez Perez of Dallas deceased in the first vehicle struck. A juvenile male in the same vehicle sustained critical injuries and was transported to Presbyterian Hospital, where his condition was later updated to stable. Two additional individuals involved in the crash were assessed by paramedics and found to be uninjured.
Ruiz faces two felony charges: a second-degree felony for collision involving injury or death, with a bond set at $50,000, and a third-degree felony for a separate injury-related charge, carrying a bond of $30,000.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
