Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) announced a global open call for artists to create signature installations in its upcoming terminal expansions, including the new Terminal F, reimagined Terminal C, and Terminal E. This initiative is part of the airport's ongoing capital construction program and aims to showcase art from a diverse mix of local, national, and international artists.
DFW Airport CEO Sean Donohue highlighted the project’s connection to the local art scene, stating, “North Texas is home to one of the nation's most vibrant and impressive art communities, and we are looking to tap into the energy and culture of the Dallas Fort Worth region as we build the airport terminals of the future."
Expanding DFW’s Art Collection
The airport’s public art program currently features 30 permanent installations. The new call will expand this by nearly 60%, adding 17 installations to its collection. These works will be delivered in four phases from 2026 through 2030, beginning with an open call for artists on December 2, 2024.
First Installation Opportunities
The first phase focuses on two site-specific installations in Terminal C. One will feature a suspended art piece within a large "exit canyon" above the path to the lower-level baggage claim. A similar suspended art installation is planned for the terminal’s main concourse.
Future Art Installations
Future opportunities include a range of installations:
- Suspended artworks in additional exit canyons.
- Sculptural floor pieces and digital walls.
- Art in a new Skylink corridor and customer respite areas.
- Rotating public art galleries exclusively showcasing North Texas artists.
Artist Selection and Local Input
Global art consultancy MASSIVart will manage the artist selection process, emphasizing participation from diverse creators, from emerging talent to internationally recognized artists. The selection process will include significant contributions from North Texas art experts, ensuring local and regional artists are represented.
The consulting panel includes:
- Jessica Fuentes, Kinfolk House Founder and Glasstire Editor.
- Christina Hahn, Creative Director of the Dallas Asian American Historical Society.
- Alison Hearst, Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth.
- Letitia Huckaby, Board President of Kinfolk House.
- Jessica Brit Ingle, President of Texas Vignette.
- Eric M. Lee, Director of the Kimball Art Museum.
- Jed Morse, Chief Curator at the Nasher Sculpture Center.
- Ade Omotosho, Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art at the Dallas Museum of Art.
Artists interested in learning more or submitting for opportunities should visit the Art at DFW website beginning December 2, 2024. Each of the four phases will be announced separately as work progresses.
