Passenger Killed in Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving 18-Wheeler on Interstate 30 in Arlington

ARLINGTON, Texas - The Arlington Police Department is investigating a fatal multi-vehicle crash involving an 18-wheeler that shut down westbound Interstate 30 early Saturday morning.

Police said officers responded around 3:45 a.m. May 23 to westbound Interstate 30 between Cooper Street and Fielder Road after reports of a major collision involving three vehicles and a semi-truck.

According to the preliminary investigation, a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed struck another car from behind, forcing it off the roadway where it collided with an unoccupied vehicle parked on the shoulder.

Investigators said the initial impact left the struck vehicle disabled across several lanes of traffic.

Authorities said an 18-wheeler traveling westbound was unable to stop in time and crashed into the disabled vehicle, ejecting the passenger from the car.

Both occupants of the vehicle were transported to local hospitals. Police said the passenger later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

Investigators believe intoxication may have been a contributing factor in the collision.

The driver of the white sedan suffered minor injuries and was also transported to a hospital for treatment, according to police.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was not injured.

Westbound Interstate 30 was temporarily closed while officers processed the scene and cleared the roadway.

The Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office will release the identity of the deceased after next of kin notifications are completed.
