IRVING, Texas — The Irving Police Department is advising residents and drone operators about a Federal Aviation Administration temporary flight restriction currently in effect over a portion of Irving and Las Colinas.
According to the FAA, the temporary flight restriction, identified as NOTAM FDC 6/4019, became effective June 1 and will remain in place through 11:59 p.m. CDT on July 20.
The restriction covers airspace within a one-nautical-mile radius centered near the Cowboy VOR/DME in Irving and extends from the surface up to and including 400 feet above ground level.
The FAA said the restriction was issued for special security reasons and prohibits unauthorized unmanned aircraft system operations, commonly known as drone flights, within the designated airspace.
The Irving Police Department reminded drone operators that they are responsible for checking applicable FAA regulations and Notices to Air Missions before conducting flights.
According to the FAA, violations of temporary flight restrictions may result in civil penalties, certificate actions or other enforcement measures.
Exceptions to the restriction include drone operations conducted in direct support of national defense, homeland security, law enforcement, firefighting or search-and-rescue missions.
Commercial drone operators with a valid statement of work may apply for a Special Governmental Interest authorization through the FAA. Requests must be submitted at least 72 hours before the proposed operation.
The FAA also warns that federal agencies, including the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security and Department of Justice, may take action to interfere with, disrupt, seize, damage or destroy unmanned aircraft that are determined to pose a credible safety or security threat within the restricted area.
Officials encourage all drone operators to review current airspace restrictions before flying and to regularly check for updates to the temporary flight restriction.
The FAA's restriction is scheduled to expire at 11:59 p.m. CDT on July 20 unless extended or modified.
