Edmundo Castañeda Named Parkland Hospital System new COO

Edmundo Castañeda, FACHE, has been named Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Parkland Health & Hospital System and is scheduled to begin in early January. He replaces David Lopez, who retired in May. Castañeda comes to Parkland with more than 20 years of experience in healthcare leadership, administration, and operations.

“Parkland is noted for being one of the best public health systems in the country,” Castañeda said. “I’m looking forward to joining the leadership team and serving the residents of Dallas County. It’s a time of great opportunity as well as challenges for the health system as it fulfills its mission of providing quality healthcare to all of the community, regardless of socio-economic status.”

Castañeda most recently worked for Dignity Health, part of CommonSpirit Health, in the greater Sacramento, CA, area. There he served as President of Mercy General Hospital and Woodland Memorial Hospital. From 2015-2017, he was responsible for Mercy General Hospital and Mercy Hospital of Folsom. During his tenure with Dignity Health, he collaborated with approximately 1,000 active staff physicians to include Dignity Health-aligned medical groups, helped the system sustain the market leading position in cardiovascular services, grew acute rehab services and oversaw operations of two physician joint-ventured outpatient centers and a 112-unit assisted living facility.

Prior to joining Dignity Health in 2012, Castañeda served as Chief Executive Officer at Tenet’s Sierra Medical Center in El Paso from 2007-2012. There he managed the regional medical center licensed for 351 beds in the highly competitive market. He has also held leadership positions at Lea Regional Medical Center in Hobbs, NM, where he served as CEO; and as COO at Mountain View Regional Medical Center in Las Cruces, NM, and administrator of HCA’s Surgical Center of El Paso & East El Paso Surgery Center, as well as other leadership positions in New Mexico.

Castañeda, who is fluent in Spanish, is a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned his Master of Healthcare Administration from Texas State University, San Marcos, TX; and his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.
