The places you have to visit in Austin

Texas as a state is becoming popular to visit, as people get the history and modernity all in one place. An interesting fact about Texas is that it’s the birth state of the popular poker variant Texas Hold’em. It’s not a complicated variant, but one can easily find a Texas Hold’em guide online to help them master it. But Texas state has a lot more to offer, its capital Austin is a city on the up and is becoming known for its excellent food, vibrant music and burgeoning tech scene. It’s also full of beautiful places worth a visit, read along to learn more about some of them.

Lady Bird Lake

One of the most beautiful attractions in Austin is the shimmering waters of Lady Bird Lake. While motorised boats are prohibited, you can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle through the calm, beautiful waters. If you want to keep your feet on dry land, there are plenty of other activities, such as hiking or biking along one of the many trails. Located to the southeast of downtown Austin, Lady Bird Lake is easily accessible by bus.

Barton Springs Pool

One of the best things to do on a hot Texan day is to visit the Barton Springs Pool. This naturally forming creek is fed by the cold water spring in Zilker Park and is a great place to cool off. The city runs and preserves the area, and plenty of well-maintained lawns are nearby where you can relax. The creek is big enough to allow you room to float around, even on busy days. It costs $4 for entry and is visitable by bus.

The State Capitol

Right in the heart of Austin lies the main legislative centre of Texas - the Texas Capitol. Originally built in 1888, the building stands fourteen feet taller than the main Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.; after all, everything’s bigger in Texas! Visitors to the Texas Capitol are free to explore the building and the grounds on their own, or they can join a free guided tour, which will last around 30 minutes. Anyone in Austin city centre can easily walk to the building or catch a bus.

Bullock Texas State History Museum

Named after the 38th lieutenant governor of Texas, the Bullock Texas State History Museum is dedicated to the storied history of the Lone Star state. Artefacts to see include an Apollo 14 mission spacesuit and the original Goddess of Liberty statue from the top of the Capitol building. The museum is open from 09:00-17:00 Monday to Saturday and from 12:00-17:00 on Sunday. As it’s in the heart of downtown, getting there is easy; you can walk, grab a taxi, or jump on a bus.

Congress Avenue Bridge

Some may not know that Austin has the most extensive urban bat colony in all of North America - over 1.5 million bats live in Congress Avenue Bridge alone! If you time it right, you can see the nightly exodus from underneath the bridge, which really is a sight to see. Located in the southwest of downtown Austin, the bridge is free to access and is best reached by bus or taxi.

Conclusion

While we’ve covered some of the highlights, there are dozens of amazing things to do in Austin. While it’s not a traditional tourist destination, it’s well worth a visit. Nothing is quite like Texas, and there’s no better city to experience in Texas than Austin!
