On Monday, June 5, 2023, at approximately 6:20 p.m., Tarrant County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the 13000 block of Lansman Drive for a Kidnapping in Progress. Upon arrival, deputies were told the suspect tried to abduct the child from her address. The child’s parents were able to get her away from the suspect before he was able to drive off with her.
The mother gave deputies the make, model and tag number of the suspect’s vehicle. Deputies went to the suspect’s address in Crowley, found the vehicle and attempted to stop and talk to the suspect, Steven Bayse, 62 years old.
Bayse refused to stop when deputies tried to pull him over, which resulted in a pursuit.
He stopped several times, acting as if he would surrender and then continued running from deputies. At one point during the chase, deputies attempted to conduct a high-risk stop, when Bayse was stopped at a red light. Again, he drove off and struck three patrol vehicles and almost struck a TCSO deputy.
Bayse eventually pulled into the parking lot of a grocery store and was taken into custody.
In a facebook post, Paige Ortiz, identified as the child's Mother, said, "his truck followed us home, and I already knew something was up. He was talking to my husband about his truck (they have similar looking trucks) when he grabbed our daughter and tried to take her to his truck. Thankfully both our parental instincts kicked it. My husband had his hands and I had a *weapon* to his throat. What we thought was someone just curious about our truck, turned into my daughter nearly being taken before our eyes. We should have been more aware of him following us from the start, but we are thankful to say our daughter is ALIVE AND UNHARMED!"
