In the early hours of Sunday morning, September 17, 2023, authorities responded to a multiple vehicle crash on southbound Loop 12 near Irving Blvd. Tragically, at least one fatality was reported in the initial collision.
Irving Fire/EMS and Police arrived at the scene, deploying an old firetruck repurposed as a blocker truck to safeguard the accident scene and block lanes of the highway, allowing first responders to work without obstruction.
However, around 4:30 am, while Irving police officers were conducting their investigation into the fatality accident, a pickup truck collided with the blocker truck. The driver of the pickup truck was subsequently pronounced deceased.
According to Irving Fire Department estimates, the pickup truck driver was traveling at approximately 100 mph at the time of the collision. Fortunately, no first responders were injured in the incident. The positioning of the blocker truck on the highway likely prevented a more severe outcome.
The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of caution and adherence to speed limits while navigating roadways, especially in the presence of emergency vehicles.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding both accidents.
