In the early hours of September 30, 2023, a fatal accident occurred on State Highway 183, leading to a complete shutdown of the eastbound lanes just east of Loop 12.
According to Irving Police, at approximately 4:00 am, a driver traveling eastbound on SH 183 collided with the collision attenuator, disabling the vehicle. The driver exited the vehicle and attempted to change a tire while the vehicle remained in a lane of traffic. Tragically, another vehicle struck the man and his vehicle, resulting in his immediate death as confirmed by Irving paramedics at the scene.
The driver and occupant of the second vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were promptly transported to the hospital for medical attention.
Due to the severity of the incident, SH 183 eastbound was entirely shut down, east of Loop 12. Commuters were rerouted, forced to exit onto Spur 482, causing significant traffic delays that lasted for several hours.
