On Sunday, October 22, 2023, at approximately 7:45 am, Plano Police officers responded to a report of a burglary of a motor vehicle (BMV) in the parking lot of RaceTrac located in the 800 block of E Park Blvd.
According to the initial call to authorities, an alert customer had observed a male suspect unlawfully enter a vehicle, remove a purse, and take cash from it. The call was made by a vigilant employee of the establishment who provided a description of the suspect as a 20-year-old black male wearing a light-grey hoodie, blue jeans, and carrying a blue backpack. The employee also reported that the suspect left the scene on foot in the direction of the nearby DART train station.
Officers arrived at the scene within four minutes of receiving the call and initiated a search for the suspect, based on the description provided. Officer Wicker spoke with the initial caller and the owner of the burglarized vehicle inside RaceTrac. Officer Wicker was able to review surveillance footage that showed the suspect attempting to access multiple vehicles by pulling on car door handles before successfully gaining access to the victim's vehicle. It was revealed that the suspect was wearing a khaki sweatshirt, blue jeans, red underwear, and had a blue backpack.
Officer Faiz, who was also in the vicinity, noticed an individual closely matching the suspect's description. The individual was observed behaving suspiciously, walking away quickly while frequently glancing back. Notably, the individual was carrying a backpack, wearing blue jeans, and had red underwear visibly sticking out of the top of his jeans.
Based on these observations, Officer Faiz decided to detain the individual, suspecting he might be linked to the BMV incident. Officer Wicker informed Officer Faiz that the stolen cash from the victim's purse consisted entirely of one-dollar bills. Officer Faiz questioned the individual about the cash he had on his person, and the individual produced a bundle of one-dollar bills matching the amount stolen from the vehicle. Consequently, the individual was placed under arrest for burglary of a motor vehicle (BMV).
This incident serves as an example of effective teamwork and cooperation between Officers Wicker and Faiz, resulting in the successful apprehension of a BMV suspect.
