On November 15, 2023, 69-year-old Sung Hwan Hong of Irving was found guilty of Aggravated Assault with Serious Bodily Injury to a Family Member with a Deadly Weapon. The case was led by prosecutor Heather Ragsdale with support from 2nd Chair Renson Abraham, and investigated by DA Investigators Lyle Gensler and Darrell Simmons, in collaboration with the Irving Police Department.
On July 9, 2020, Hong shot his estranged wife multiple times, including in the head, and subsequently struck her multiple times with a hammer. The victim survived her injuries and bravely testified at the trial. The jury deliberated and rendered a verdict of guilty.
The presiding judge sentenced Hong to life in prison for the heinous crime.
