Denton Police Arrest Driver in Fatal Hit-and-Run

The Denton Police Department has arrested 27-year-old Tyras Batson in connection with a hit-and-run that occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, April 12, and resulted in the death of a pedestrian.

At approximately 2:12 a.m., witnesses reported that a dark-colored sedan struck two female pedestrians in the 2300 block of Carril Al Lago Drive and fled the scene.

One of the pedestrians, 22-year-old Deepthi Vangavolu, succumbed to her injuries at a hospital on Tuesday, April 15. The second injured woman was also hospitalized and is currently recovering at home.

Following an extensive investigation by Denton PD, local agencies, and the community, the suspect vehicle was identified as a 2015 Kia Optima. Investigators arrested the driver, Tyras Batson of Denton, on Thursday, April 17, for Collision Involving Death. He is currently being held in the City of Denton Jail, and his bond has not yet been set.

The Denton Police Department stated that the investigation into this incident is ongoing.
