Grand Prairie, TX – On Sunday, August 31, at approximately 12:50 a.m., Grand Prairie police officers responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting an active disturbance while traveling west on Interstate 30 from Dallas.
The caller told dispatchers her intoxicated boyfriend, who was driving, was armed with a handgun and assaulting her as they drove. Officers quickly located the vehicle as it exited IH-30 at Belt Line Road and stopped at a gas station parking lot.
The female victim fled from the passenger side as officers approached. Knowing the suspect was armed, police issued multiple commands for him to show his hands and comply. Instead, the suspect reached back inside the vehicle. Fearing for their safety and the victim’s, an officer discharged his weapon, striking the suspect.
A loaded handgun was later recovered in the area where the suspect had been reaching. Officers provided lifesaving aid before the suspect was transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The female victim sustained injuries from the assault and was treated and released at the scene. Witnesses reported that the suspect had fired the handgun several times out of the vehicle window before encountering officers.
The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the suspect’s identity after notifying next of kin. In accordance with departmental policy, the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office Officer-Involved Shooting Team is conducting an independent investigation. The Grand Prairie Police Department’s Office of Professional Standards is also conducting an administrative review.
