Driver Arrested After DWI Crash on SH-183 in Irving, Fled Scene Leaving Injured Passengers

Walter Carranza-Portillo

IRVING, Texas - Irving police arrested a 22-year-old man after a late-night crash on State Highway 183 that left two people injured and the suspected at-fault driver fleeing the scene, authorities said.

Officers with the Irving Police Department were dispatched around 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 27, 2026, to a major collision on eastbound SH-183 at North O’Connor Road. Investigators determined that Walter Carranza-Portillo, 22, was the sole occupant of a Ford F-150 that collided with a red Dodge Charger.

Police said the Dodge Charger was left inoperable. The driver, a 23-year-old man, sustained minor injuries, while a 23-year-old female passenger was transported to a hospital with a broken arm. Carranza-Portillo suffered a fractured clavicle and fled the scene on foot before officers arrived.

Using clothing descriptions, officers located and detained Carranza-Portillo on the north service road of SH-183 at North O’Connor Road. According to police, he admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving and said he fled because he did not have insurance. Officers noted glassy eyes and a strong odor of alcohol, and a horizontal gaze nystagmus test indicated signs of intoxication. A voluntary blood draw later confirmed intoxication.

A records check showed no prior arrests for driving while intoxicated. During a search of the Ford F-150, officers located a pistol and 9mm ammunition, which were seized for safekeeping.

After receiving medical treatment, Carranza-Portillo was transported to the Irving Jail. He was charged with collision involving injury for leaving the scene and driving while intoxicated. Because of his illegal immigration status in the country, police said an immigration hold was placed during booking to initiate federal immigration proceedings following his court hearings.
