Six-Hour Standoff Ends with Arrest After Burglary in Northeast Denton

DENTON, Texas — What began as a burglary investigation Saturday morning escalated into a six-hour standoff that ended with a suspect safely in custody.

On February 28, 2026, Denton Police officers were investigating a burglary at a business in the 1900 block of Virginia Circle, near Highway 380, when they encountered a male suspect inside a building on the property. The suspect fled from officers, climbed onto a roof, and entered another building that contained accessible firearms.

Specialized units, including Denton PD negotiators, SWAT, and the department’s Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) team, responded to the scene. The Trophy Club Police Department K9 unit also assisted.

Officers negotiated for several hours with the suspect, later identified as 30-year-old Miles Montalvo. Throughout the incident, drones provided real-time visibility of the suspect’s movements. The department also deployed its newly acquired, grant-funded Public Safety command bus for the first time, allowing officers to coordinate from a centralized mobile command post while monitoring live drone feeds.

Meanwhile, dispatchers and additional officers continued handling unrelated emergency calls across the city.

After more than six hours, Montalvo exited the building and was taken into custody without further incident. A stolen firearm was recovered from his waistband. He now faces multiple charges.

Police officials said the incident highlighted both strong interagency teamwork and the growing role of technology in enhancing public safety.
